T.J. Oshie scored into an empty net in the rare situation of a team pulling its goaltender in a tie game, and the Washington Capitals are in the playoffs after beating the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1. Philadelphia coach John Tortorella pulled goalie Samuel Ersson for an extra attacker because his team needed to win in regulation to keep its hopes alive. Oshie's goal with exactly 3 minutes left came perhaps a minute after Detroit scored to force overtime in Montreal actually eliminated the Flyers. The Capitals will face the NHL-best New York Rangers in the first round.
Zach Ryan scored the tying goal late in the first half and Drew Skundrich netted the go-ahead goal midway through the second half to lift Loudoun United FC to a 2-1 win over Memphis 901 FC on Saturday at Segra Field in Leesburg.
John Carlson scored the go-ahead goal with 11:31 left to help the Washington Capitals potentially save their season by beating the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2. Charlie Lindgren made 32 saves in another strong performance when his team needed him, while Sonny Milano scored twice and Nic Dowd added an insurance goal in the final minutes. The Capitals winning for just the second time in nine games at least temporarily move into the second and final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Anthony Duclair and Brandon Hagel scored for the Lightning who are locked into the East's first wild card.
Virginia Academy put the finishing touch on its fourth consecutive championship season by defeating Steward School 58-53 in the 2024 Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II girls' basketball title game.
